"Loss of Innocence"

Young Khmer & Vietnamese Girls are regularly forced into the illegal sex trade in SE-Asia. Posted by Hello

As you drive towards the dusty town of Svay Pak or K-11 (for its distance 11km from the city), the red-light district on the outskirts of Phnom Penh - Cambodia, you will see a continual influx of "berungs" along the way, on their hired moto's. The obvious purpose of their trips are to visit the brothel's within the area.

On the left, right outside the entrance to the village, there is a huge billboard, with a picture of a giant condom with the phrase "We Practice Safe Sex" in a multiple languages. As you turn left into the red light district, rows and rows of brothels are fronted with young girls, smiling and waving trying to gesture you in. The terms "Yum-Yum" will get you oral sex, while "Boom Boom" will lead to intercourse.

Svay-pak a small Vietnamese community, is mainly known for its abundancy of underaged and light skinned girls. A large proportion of these girls have been smuggled in from Vietnam, promised with great job opportunities, however as they arrive in Cambodia they are bound by yearly contracts with the pimp.

The first impression as you arrive in Svay Pak, are the abundancy of available girls who are eager to make that extra buck. What the brothel owners don't make public, is the fact that there are also a wide selection of underage children available for foreigners and local pedaphiles alike, as young as four or five.

In the west, young children smile and laugh about the most innocent things, whereas here in Cambodia they are suffering and being forced into the sex-trade, where they have 'loss their innocence,' bearing pain and humiliation. Instead of playing with toys and learning their ABC's and 123's, children here are the actual toys for firty old pedophiles.

Most prostitutes come from poor families in Cambodia's country-side or smuggled in from neighboring Vietnam. Parents of the girls, are misled into thinking that their daughters will have a better life and more job opportunies in the city. However as soon as the pimp offer an amount of money to the parents as an incentive for letting go of their daighter, the girls are forced into the sex trade and are bound by yearly contracts in order to pay their debts.

Virgins that have been smuggled in from Vietnam are considered delicacies and therefore are an expensive addition for any brothel owner, usually costing them $350-450, with non-virgins they are usually bought for half the price. A "berung" who wants the complete package, minus the disease pays up to $300 per session with a virgin. Once the girls are considered 'used-goods, or second hand products' their value drops dramatically, to as low as a $3-4 per sexual transaction. Some brothel owners will go to great lengths to provide virgin look-alikes, in order to do so, brothel owners gets non-virgins stitched up. To prevent their escape, some brothel owners lock the girls up in small tiny cages, where they are treated worse than animals.

Everyday more and more children from Cambodia and Vietnam are forced into the inhumane sex-trade of South East Asia. Why are there so many sick freaks in this unjust world? Can you imagine your own children as young as 5 being raped and forced to do things that are morally wrong? Can you imagine young innocent children who are supposed to be learning their ABC's and 123's, being used as sex-slaves and forced to do things kids in the west have no knowledge of? "It is a sin against humanity, and it is a horrendous crime.

"It just hurts to know that my many young little cousins live nearby the brothels in this area. It makes me uncomfortable to think they are raised up in such a community, and have to witness the continual influx of "berungs" going there for one thing. It just scares me, to think that they 'could' possibly get involved if made to, or threatened to by the neighbouring people of the area, (pimps and brothel owners). Let's just hope for the best

  • yeah... such pitiful mishaps tend to occur in Asian countries... y is that? coz they lack moral prospects? i think not... the government doesnt seem to care that all these things are happening.... or even try to help... or rectify the situation... honestly, its pretty clear whats going on... they cant say they dont know its going on... they're covering a blind eye so as to pocket the revenue raised by the excessive tourism of sick pervert paedophiles... sad really. moral decay is really redundant in our society.

  • Agreed. *sigh* emmersing yourself in this stuff makes the world an extremly dirty and rotten place. We all have the chance to make a difference, what's worse is the people who sit there, know about can but won't do a thing to help that. If growing up and making money is what is all about, then i'll never grow old. It's fortunate that we'd studying to become accountant, IT programmers and me, a finance analyst. We will have the chance one day to make a difference Al, and i know this has been bothering you since you got back from Cambodia these many years now. Don't worry bro, you know you got us with ya, through and through. Go the lost boys!!!

  • i have to admit, i didn't read all of your original post - enough is enough. i'm actually pretty suprised that some people didn't know that these things happen, especially with the amount of intant media technology we have, and the whole seemingly humanitarian turn of society.

its funny though, that those who have the power to do something stnad by and let the foreigners come in and out, taking the innocence and dignity of those they come in contact with. i'm not referring to tourists or foreigners in general, just those sick demented ones who justify peadophilia by saying "this is my kind of 'normal', maybe you people are the ones who are sick".

but having said that, people liek us can to a small extent do something about the problem. but honestly, when we do grow up and get job and whatever, self-preservation in the end trumps any ideal of humanitarianism. i'd like to say that wasn't true, but i think in most cases it is.

people with ridculous amounts of money could single-handedly stop the sex trade in aisa and other continents, but they prefer to drive nice cars and live in ivory palaces.

the notion that children are forced to be sex slaves by thier parents is troubling to say the least, but in thier mind (the parents), they are doing what they need to to survive. its sad and disgusting that these kinds of ideals have become part of thier culture. but don't take a western's approach to social problems by blaming the parents - sometimes they don't have a choice.

i'm not condoning the sex slave industry, like an overwhelming majority i am completely against it. but the problem is far too big for any one of us "ordinary people" to tackle, and until there is a genuine move to stop it - as opposed to "funds" from organisations that buy plasma screen displays and high-back leather swivel chairs - it will continue.

humanity isn't being pulled into a moral vacuum, it is acknowledging that these thigns happen and is attempting to do something about it. the very notion of morality is subjective, but as international bodies like the UN have decided on is the basic and fundamental protect of human rights and dignity.

until that doctrine is adopted by other world leaders, shit like this will continue to happen, and those who encourage it will be veiled by silence.

let them all burn in a jet-fuelled fire in hell.

  • Yeah, its sickening. But with the rapid growth of the population, its too hard to deal with as new issues come into play. Plus, i don't think its ever gonna be fully prevented when pornography and the sex industry is one of the most profitable money makers. So unless all horny cunts are riped off of their sexual desires, illegal sex trades will not stop just like that. Also, existing countries that are in poverty derives those children of their education and thus are unable to prevent them from becoming victims of such crimes.
I did an essay for children trafficking before and its so horrible to know that the girls vagina would be sewed up once in a while to tighten it up just as if they were a virgin. The thought of it just kills! Like everyone else i'm sure, we hope that the world would be a peaceful place. But the fact is, it'll never be possible as long as conflicting opinions and greed exists. But we can only hope that the world will at least take a step closer to being a peaceful place

  • Thank you for giving these children a face and a voice. I know you will make a difference. It is just too sad for words.

Thank you for having the courage to look at what can only break our hearts.

  • You should know that the major customers of the sex trade (and the under age sex trade) in both Cambodia and Thailand, are Cambodians and Thais. Such places didn't just rise to cater to western tourists. That is just something the governments of both countrys say to avoi d the issue of their own problem. Such places were there before foreigner knew of them. Customers are often people in power too (another reason for them to ignore the problem and blame the "outsider").
